Ice quakes

Antarctica is a long way from Japan. However, the massive earthquake that hit the country in March killing over 20,000 people and destroying a nuclear power complex also affected the faraway continent of rock and ice. NASA released a striking video with satellite images of how reverberations from the magnitude 8.9 quake and resulting tsunami fractured an Antarctic ice shelf here: We forget that we exist on the skin of an active planet where internal geology often controls what happens on the surface.
