The Lives of Giant Trees

Mountaineering gear used in forest research (credit: Richard Preston)

The old-growth trees of the temperate rainforests in the Pacific Northwest are gigantic, magical, and poorly understood. Understanding their ecosystem better will improve conservation and management of forest restoration efforts. The author Richard Preston, The Hot Zone and The Wild Trees , explores the dimensions of these ancient giants using the tools of a mountaineer to access their canopies. Preston offers his perspective on redwoods and other forest giants in a terrific presentation at a TED conference.
