Visualizing Our Fragile Biosphere

Visualizing Our Fragile Biosphere

Buckminster Fuller (credit: Dan Lindsay]

Buckminster Fuller was almost a victim of his own success. His geodesic domes enclosed more space with less material than any other architectural designs. Like mushrooms they popped up all across natural landscapes after their invention. The domes became almost popular icons of a crazy inventor. But their oddness---seemingly the work of a dreamer---helped to pigeonhole Fuller. He was actually a very deep thinker on many more subjects than architectural designs.

Adam Savage of Mythbusters remembers something Fuller once said. It was a way to explain the fragility of the Earth's biosphere in one simple demonstration. WHB
