The End of the World

Saw a billboard today saying the world will end on May 21. These folks -- Family Radio -- guarantee it, via infallible proofs. One proof is that 2011 is EXACTLY 7,000 years since the Great Flood, and "a day is like a thousand years to the Lord," and since it took the Lord a week to create the world he'll destroy it after seven days ... i.e. 7,000 years. So, see you! Been nice knowing you! The Washington Post is even covering this prediction of the end of the world. And Richard Dawkins is seriously asked about it. And this atheist is making a small fortune by offering to take care of the pets left behind by the believers who are raptured. Here's the Washington Post's look at his operation. His website's FAQ is a wonderful bizarro-world, one of the rare times when two groups with wildly different worldviews try to engage in business based on the difference between those views. Why is RiledUp, a website in love with science, telling you about nonsense like this? Why don't we believe NASA when they say there's nothing special going on? We're trying to increase our readership. A poll says that 41 percent of Americans believe that Jesus will come back before 2050.  So it's time we started to cater to them and to look at the scientific possibility that Jesus will return. According to my scientific calculations, Jesus will return on October 5, 2049, which is based on close readings of the Bible, consulting tea leaves, and my desire to be very old when it's proved that I'm wrong. I'm dreading that moment. For these yahoos, that moment is coming in 10 days. - RC
