Solar soldiers

Australia is ofter called "the sunbaked land" and not without good reason. The sun shines almost all the time on the island continent. Not surprisingly, the Aussies have been solar energy pioneers but their latest development is really pushing the envelope of generating applications from the sun. Solar energy researchers from the Australian National University have just developed a light-weight solar vest for soldiers. [caption id="attachment_6676" align="aligncenter" width="537" caption="Solar powered vest for Australian soldiers (source: ANU)"][/caption] The solar panels can be worn anywhere on a soldiers uniform, backpack, or helmet and reduce the overall weight of gear that a guy must carry. The flexible, thin, PV cells match the efficient of conventional solar cells and can power electronic devices in close battleground situations, replacing the need to lug around heavy, traditional batteries. The solar soldier is reporting for duty. Good on ya, mate! WHB
